Had antepartum bleeding for three weeks before delivery, Admitted for observation, went into premature labour Received two doses of Dexamethasone before delivering.


Baby born Mowbray Maternity Hospital 2nd November 2001
Normal delivery, Apgars 6 and 8
Birth mass 780g, Ballard score 28 weeks
Small for gestational age
Head small for age and weight


Placed in skin-to-skin contact at birth, initially "doing well"
spontaneous breathing.
Transferred to High Care Unit - further incubator care
good oxygenation in head box (37% oxygen)

First week
Had good oxygenation in room air in the beginning, had early jaundice treated with phototherapy, also was treated for infection. Mother expressing, but not tolerating feeds well. Day 7: started having apnoea attacks, treated with nasal prongs CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure)
Weight day 7: 720g
Daily skin-to-skin contact 2 to 3 hours

Second week
Nasal prong CPAP continued as necessary. Had a distended abdomen, infection suspected: antibiotics started.
Weight day 14: 760g
Daily skin-to-skin contact 3 to 4 hours

Third week
Continued episodic apnoea, responding to stimulation, treated with nasal prong CPAP as necessary. Developed abdominal distension and vomiting, new infection diagnosed and treated.
Weight day 21: 710g
Missed some days of Skin-to-skin.

Fourth week
Gradually needing less oxygen and CPAP, given blood transfusion for anaemia, and completed antibiotics for infection. Managed full feeds first time
Weight day 28: 800g
Daily skin-to-skin contact

Fifth week
Still needing some oxygen by nasal cannula, no apnoeas
Weight day 35: 900g
Daily skin-to-skin contact

Sixth week
Developed enterococcal septicaemia, treated. Feeds discontinued.
Weight day 42: 1020 g

Seventh week
Responded well to treatment, feeds restarted slowly. Still requiring oxygen.
Weight day 49: 1100 g

Eighth week (CHRISTMAS WEEK ! got present! page 13)
stable - waned off oxygen during course of the week.
Weight day 56: 1100 g

Ninth week
Received dexamethasone, otherwise uneventful week. Full feeds by nasogastric tube
Weight day 63: 1190g
Father did skin-to-skin for the first time ! See Page 14

Tenth week
Mild anaemia treated.
Weight day 70: 1340 g

Eleventh week
uneventful week, growing steadily
Weight day 77: 1490g

Twelfth week
Developed septicaemia, responded quickly to intravenous antibiotic treatment
Weight day 84: 1540g

Thirteenth week
Transferred to step down unit
Weight day 91: 1660 g

Fourteenth week
Transferred to KMC ward (see page 25)
Weight day 98: 1770 g
